About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton offers an exciting opportunity to explore the use of vibrating microbubbles for targeted drug delivery within the body. The research sits at the intersection of biophysics, biomedical engineering, and medical physics, and is supervised by Prof Nicholas Evans, Prof Jize Yan, and Dr Janos Kanczler. The project aims to develop and utilize advanced imaging techniques—including ultra-high-speed cameras, metalens microscopes, and digital image correlation—to capture and analyze the 3D effects of ultrasound-activated microbubbles on cells and tissues.

When exposed to ultrasound, microbubbles vibrate at extremely high frequencies, generating forces that propagate through surrounding biological structures. These forces can enhance drug uptake, promote tissue repair, or, if not controlled, cause cell injury. By imaging these rapid events in unprecedented detail, you will help uncover the fundamental mechanisms by which microbubble-induced forces interact with living tissues. The ultimate goal is to inform the design of safer, more effective ultrasound-based therapies for healing and drug delivery.

The project is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on expertise from medicine, engineering, and physics. You will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and work within a supportive, diverse academic environment recognized for its commitment to equality, diversity, and sustainability. The University of Southampton holds an Athena SWAN award and offers a range of benefits to support work-life balance, including generous maternity policies and onsite childcare.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related discipline. Applications must include a CV, two academic references, degree transcripts and certificates, and proof of English language proficiency if required.

Funding: Multiple funding opportunities are available. Horizon Europe fee waivers automatically cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students. Competition-based Presidential Bursaries and studentships may cover UK-level tuition fees and provide a stipend for living costs for top-ranked applicants. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.

Application Process: Apply online by selecting the PhD Engineering & the Environment (7175) programme (Research) for 2026/27 in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Choose full-time or part-time study, and include the supervisor's name in section 2 of the application. For questions, contact [email protected] or reach out to Prof Nicholas Evans at [email protected] for an initial conversation.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research with real-world impact in medical technology and therapeutic innovation.
