About this position
The International Max Planck Research School for Physics and Medicine (IMPRS-PM) at the Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (MPZPM) in Erlangen offers a highly innovative graduate programme for PhD and MSc candidates. Established in January 2022, IMPRS-PM aims to educate and train a new generation of scientists with deep insight into both physics and medical research. The programme is run in close collaboration with Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL), and Universitätsklinikum Erlangen (UKER).
IMPRS-PM provides excellent research conditions and a structured curriculum within an international and interdisciplinary environment. The main language of instruction and scientific interaction is English, and free German classes are offered at MPL and FAU. The programme is full-time, with a typical duration of 6 semesters. Both MSc stipends and PhD positions are available, and the curriculum includes additional skills courses, international guest lecturers, specialist literature, and training in intercultural skills. Projects with partners in Germany and abroad are encouraged, and collaboration with other research groups may be necessary depending on the research topic.
There are no tuition fees for the programme, and students at FAU pay a semester contribution of 72 EUR. While no explicit funding opportunities within the university are mentioned, the IMPRS course offers structured research and supervision, integrated language courses, and support for international students and doctoral candidates. The Welcome Centre assists new students in finding accommodation in Erlangen and Nürnberg, cities known for their historic flair and modern infrastructure.
Applicants must hold a Master's degree in physics, biology, integrated life sciences, molecular medicine, or medical engineering. A very good command of English is mandatory, but a language test certificate is not required (though strongly recommended). Knowledge of German is not required, and language training is provided. The IMPRS coordination office serves as the first contact for new students, and workshops or courses on career development and additional skills are offered regularly.
Applications are accepted throughout the year. For more information and to apply, visit the official application page. The programme offers a combined Master's/PhD option and joint/double degree opportunities. The structured curriculum and international elements make IMPRS-PM an attractive choice for students seeking interdisciplinary research training in physics and medicine.
