About this position
The International Max Planck Research School for Physics and Medicine (IMPRS-PM) at the Max-Planck-Zentrum für Physik und Medizin (MPZPM) offers a highly innovative graduate programme established in January 2022. This interdisciplinary programme is designed to educate and train a new generation of scientists with expertise in both physics and medical research. IMPRS-PM is run in collaboration with Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL), and Universitätsklinikum Erlangen (UKER).
The programme offers both MSc stipends and PhD positions, with the main language of instruction and interaction being English. Free German language classes are available at MPL and FAU, and knowledge of German is not required for admission. The curriculum is structured to provide excellent research conditions within an international and interdisciplinary environment, and includes additional skills courses on a voluntary basis. The curriculum details can be found at this link.
IMPRS-PM features international guest lecturers, specialist literature in other languages, language training, and projects with partners in Germany and abroad. Training in intercultural skills is also provided. While internships are not required, collaboration with other research groups, including international ones, may be necessary depending on the research topic.
There are no tuition fees for the programme, and the semester contribution at FAU is 72 EUR. However, no explicit funding opportunities within the university are mentioned. The programme duration is six semesters, and applications are accepted throughout the year. For more information and to apply, visit the application page.
Academic admission requirements include a Master's degree in physics, biology, integrated life sciences, molecular medicine, or medical engineering. A very good command of English is mandatory, and while a language test certificate is not required, it is strongly recommended. The IMPRS coordination office serves as the first contact for all new students, offering workshops and courses on career development and additional skills. Support for international students and doctoral candidates includes a welcome event, specialist counselling, and assistance with visa matters.
Erlangen and Nürnberg are attractive cities with historic flair and modern infrastructure. The Welcome Centre assists new students in finding accommodation. The programme is structured with research and supervision, research training, and discussion, preparing graduates for future professional careers in academia and industry.
