About this position

The Institute for Insolvency Law at KU Leuven, Belgium, offers a PhD position (FLOF – 100%) focused on research and education in insolvency law, corporate finance, and the economic analysis of law. As a doctoral researcher, you will have the opportunity to conduct research in the broad domain of business law, with a preferred focus on insolvency law in its broadest sense, including enforcement, security interests, guarantees, bankruptcy, and reorganisation. Legal aspects of corporate finance and economic analysis of law are also central themes.

The PhD project is supervised by Professor Joeri Vananroye. The precise topic of your thesis will be determined in consultation with the supervisor, allowing for flexibility and alignment with your interests and expertise. In addition to research, you will provide limited teaching support (approximately 10% of your workload) in the context of Prof. Vananroye’s courses.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in law, economics, law and business, or an equivalent degree with good to excellent study results. A strong interest in insolvency law and/or economic analysis of law is essential. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to integrate into the research group and educational team, and to complete a PhD within four years. Good command of English is required, and knowledge of Dutch is considered an asset.

The position offers full-time employment for at least one year, with renewals possible upon favourable evaluation: one year after the first year, and two years after the second year, for a maximum total of four years. The starting date can be determined in consultation with the supervisor.

KU Leuven is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment. Diversity is embraced as an asset, and the university does not tolerate discrimination based on gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ethnic or national background, skin colour, religious or philosophical diversity, neurodivergence, employment disability, health, or socioeconomic status.

For further information, contact Prof. Joeri Vananroye at [email protected]. The application deadline is June 29, 2026. Applications should be submitted via the KU Leuven job portal. For questions about accessibility or support, assistance is available at the provided email address.
