About this position
The International Water Research Institute (IWRI) at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Benguerir, Morocco, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow for an applied research project focused on membrane-based pretreatment for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination. UM6P is a leading, internationally oriented university dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and innovation, with a strong commitment to sustainable economic development in Morocco and Africa. The university offers a vibrant research ecosystem, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and a collaborative environment that supports impactful, solution-oriented science.
IWRI is recognized for its interdisciplinary research in water, climate, and sustainable development, aiming to bridge local and regional water challenges with global issues. The institute’s research activities span integrated water resources management, water-related technologies (including desalination, demineralization, water treatment, recycling, and reuse), water–energy–food–health–education nexus, water–soil interactions, climate change adaptation, and environmental sustainability.
The postdoctoral fellow will contribute to the development, optimization, and scale-up of advanced membrane-based pretreatment solutions for seawater desalination. Key responsibilities include seawater monitoring and characterization, data analysis and modeling, system design and laboratory experimentation, operation and maintenance protocol development, pilot-scale testing and field deployment, performance assessment and process optimization, reporting, and scientific dissemination. The role involves planning and conducting sampling campaigns, processing and analyzing water quality data, designing and operating lab-scale systems, developing O&M protocols, organizing field missions, diagnosing performance limitations, and preparing technical reports and scientific publications.
Applicants must have a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Water-Process Engineering, Membrane Materials and Processes, or a closely related field. Relevant experience in desalination and filtration systems at laboratory, pilot, or industrial scale is required, with a strong background in ceramic membrane materials and processes considered a significant advantage. Hands-on experience with water treatment processes and water quality analysis is mandatory. Candidates should demonstrate innovative thinking, excellent communication and teamwork skills, fluency in English and French, and the ability to work in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments. Experience in leading or contributing to research projects and scientific writing for high-impact journals is highly desirable. Willingness to travel for fieldwork and a valid driver’s license are required.
The position is offered as a 1-year fixed-term contract, with the possibility of extension. The starting date is as soon as possible. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications via the academic positions portal. For further information, contact the university directly.
