About this position

Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, is inviting applications for a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) / Post Doctorate Fellow position in a sponsored research project under the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing (CoEAM).

The project is titled “Experimental and Computational Study on the Tribo-Mechanical Performance of Defect-Engineered AM-Fabricated FGMs for Extreme Environments” and is being carried out in collaboration with the University of Southampton, UK. The work is strongly research-oriented and sits at the intersection of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, advanced manufacturing, additive manufacturing, functionally graded materials, directed energy deposition, surface engineering, and computational modelling.

JRF eligibility: B.E./B.Tech/M.E./M.Tech in Mechanical, Design, CAD/CAM, Metallurgy, Production/Manufacturing Engineering, or M.Sc. in Physics/Materials Science, or equivalent, with at least 60% aggregate or equivalent CGPA. A valid GATE/NET score is preferred for the higher emolument level.

Postdoctoral eligibility: PhD awarded in Mechanical, Metallurgy, Production/Manufacturing Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or equivalent.

Desirable profile: Candidates should have good knowledge of additive manufacturing processes, surface engineering, materials science, experimental design, and CAD/CAE/material modelling software. The selected researcher will conduct field research in tribology, defect engineering, directed energy deposition (DED), testing, characterization, and development of computational/predictive models for wear evolution in FGM.

Funding: This is a sponsored project position. JRF stipend is Rs. 45,000/month with valid GATE/NET or Rs. 30,000/month without valid GATE/NET. The postdoctoral fellowship carries Rs. 60,000/month. The appointment is contractual and initially valid until 31/05/2027, with possible extension based on performance.

Application deadline: 15 June 2026.

How to apply: Email a single PDF containing your CV, self-attested copies of mark sheets, certificates, GATE/NET score card, and testimonials to [email protected]. Mention the subject line exactly as specified in the advertisement. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by email for an online interview.
