About this position

The Tissue Homeostasis and Disease research group at KU Leuven offers a PhD position focused on lipid-microenvironments in articular cartilage and osteoarthritis. This international, dynamic team conducts advanced molecular biology research to understand the mechanisms controlling joint homeostasis and disease, leveraging primary human cells and tissues, multi-omics technologies, animal models, and genetic engineering. Their work is published in leading journals such as Science Translational Medicine, Nature Communications, and Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, reflecting strong international recognition.

The Skeletal Biology and Engineering Research Centre (SBE) at KU Leuven, located on Campus Gasthuisberg, is dedicated to advancing knowledge of musculoskeletal diseases and developing effective therapies. The SBE comprises over 60 scientists across four independent research groups, fostering multidisciplinary collaborations with experts in in silico modelling and tissue engineering.

This project investigates the role of lipids as signaling molecules in cartilage, focusing on their organization in micro-environments that influence cell behavior in health and disease. The central hypothesis is that lipid micro-environments sustain joint tissue homeostasis, and their disruption contributes to osteoarthritis. The research employs spatial transcriptomic and lipidomic approaches, complemented by gain- and loss-of-function experiments ex vivo and in vivo, aiming to identify novel therapeutic targets to alleviate osteoarthritis burden and improve patient outcomes.

Applicants should have an excellent academic record and hold a Master's degree in biology or biomedical sciences. Candidates who have not yet completed their master's thesis are encouraged to apply. Laboratory experience with omic technologies, cell culture, and biochemical assays is desirable but not essential. Experience with laboratory animals and a Felasa B certificate are advantageous. The ideal candidate is proactive, ambitious, dynamic, precise, and capable of both independent and team work, with excellent English communication skills.

The offer includes a full-time PhD research contract for one year, with the possibility of extension for at least three more years. Candidates are encouraged to apply for a predoctoral fellowship. The position provides daily guidance, training, and opportunities for participation in national and international collaborations and conferences. The research environment is stimulating, international, multidisciplinary, and supportive of quality, professionalism, and collaborative team spirit.

KU Leuven is committed to inclusivity, diversity, and equal opportunity, fostering a respectful and socially safe environment. For accessibility or support questions, applicants are invited to contact the university.

For more information, contact Prof. dr. Rik Lories ([email protected]) or Prof. dr. Silvia Monteagudo ([email protected]). Apply online via the KU Leuven job portal. The application deadline is 20 May 2026.
