About this position

M.S. Assistantship in Plant Evolutionary Ecology at South Dakota State University

The Wenzell Lab in the Department of Natural Resource Management at South Dakota State University is recruiting a Master’s student for an assistantship starting August 2026 or January 2027. The project focuses on plant evolutionary ecology, floral trait variation, genetic structure, ecology and evolution, and conservation, using the diverse flowering forb genus Castilleja (paintbrushes) as a study system.

The student will investigate climatic and ecological drivers of floral trait variation and genetic structure. Existing datasets are already available, including range-wide floral color and morphology data, pollinator visitation data, and RAD-sequencing data, with potential opportunities to expand the project in new directions.

Funding includes at least two years of support, a competitive stipend, and tuition remission. The lab’s broader research examines how variation in floral traits shapes genetic connectivity and pollinator interactions in native plant species of the North American Great Plains.

Preferred applicants will have coursework and/or experience in evolutionary biology and genetics, and a strong interest in ecology and evolution of native nonmodel plant species. Helpful additional experience includes ecological fieldwork, GIS, R, spatial analysis, and conservation.

Required background: a B.S. degree in biology, botany, ecology, or a related field.

To apply, send a cover letter, academic CV, unofficial transcripts, and three professional references to Dr. Katie Wenzell at [email protected]. The deadline for full consideration is May 31, 2026, and the position will remain open until filled.
