About this position
The Livestock Genomics Research Group at Dalhousie University, Department of Animal Science & Aquaculture, is recruiting for three fully funded graduate positions (MSc and PhD) starting in 2026. These positions focus on cutting-edge research in livestock genomics, genetic evaluation, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, with applications to animal health, robustness, and sustainability. The projects are supported by NSERC grants and offer competitive stipends.
Available Positions:
- MSc/PhD Position – Genetic Evaluation Systems in Mink: Develop and implement genetic evaluation systems using large-scale phenotypic and genomic data from North American mink farms. Start: February 2026. Stipend: $35,000/year for 3 years.
- MSc Position – Machine Learning & Whole-Genome Sequencing for Mink Robustness: Apply machine learning algorithms and statistical methods to improve health and robustness traits in mink. Start: May 2026. Stipend: $27,000/year for 2 years.
- PhD Position – AI & Genomics for Resilience Traits in Farm Animals: Use AI-driven genomic evaluation methods, deep learning, and breeding program design to enhance sustainability in livestock. Start: September 2026. Stipend: $35,000/year for 4 years.
Research Areas: Livestock genomics, genetic evaluation, quantitative genetics, computational biology, machine learning, AI, bioinformatics, breeding program design, and animal health.
Eligibility: Applicants should have a relevant bachelor's or master's degree (animal science, quantitative genetics, computational biology, biology, or related fields). For the MSc, a strong foundation in quantitative genetics and genomics is required. For the PhD, a master's degree in a relevant field is required. Skills in R, Python, machine learning, BLUP, and bioinformatics are valued. Minimum GPA of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study is required. International students must meet English-language proficiency requirements. Strong communication skills, motivation, and ability to work collaboratively are essential.
Funding: All positions are fully funded with competitive stipends. MSc/PhD positions: $35,000/year (3 years for MSc/PhD, 4 years for PhD). MSc position: $27,000/year (2 years). Funding is provided through NSERC grants.
