About this position

Victoria Biomedical Research Institute (VIBRI) in Kisumu City, Kenya is inviting applications for postgraduate research projects in the newly established Cancer Biology Research Group led by Dr. Victor Oria.

This opportunity is aimed at continuing MSc and PhD students who are ready to begin the research phase of their studies. The projects focus on cancer biology, bioinformatics, data science, data mining, tumor biology, multi-omics, and systems biology, with a strong emphasis on understanding tumor biology through computational and biomedical approaches.

MSc projects (1 year) include: novel insights into hypoxia-dependent remodeling of the endothelial secretome; comparative matrisome dynamics across disease progression in lung cancer; and deciphering angiogenesis-mediated matrisome changes in highly vascular tumors. The PhD project (3 years) explores the conserved ADAM metalloproteases program in low-grade gliomas using an integrated multi-omics and systems biology approach.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in an MSc or PhD programme in biomedical science, biochemistry, molecular medicine, molecular biology, cell biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, data science, or a related field. The advert also asks for completion or near-completion of coursework, willingness to learn R and other data analysis tools, and preferably experience with omics data analysis, data mining, and statistical analysis.

Funding is limited but includes a small stipend during the project. The post does not mention tuition coverage or a full scholarship.

To apply, candidates should email a combined CV (3 pages) and a 1-page statement of interest to Dr. Victor Oria at [email protected]. The deadline is 30 June 2026.
