About this position

Tampere University invites applications for a MSCA Doctoral Researcher position focused on the development of a 3D-in vitro neuronal system for assessing electric field interference simulation. This opportunity is part of the EU Horizon Europe – MSCA BRAINET project, which aims to advance deep brain stimulation using electric field spatio-temporal interference, targeting therapeutic regions without the need for deep electrodes. The project will develop skull implantable stimulation hubs that form a communication network for 3D targeting, enabling self-adjusting therapeutic stimulation powered by novel magneto-electrical transducer stacks and nano-modified, compliant electrodes.

The doctoral candidate will be responsible for developing tools and methodologies to assess the effects of non-invasive interference stimulation on the nervous system, both in vitro and in vivo. The research will involve electrophysical measurements using commercial systems and newly developed devices, as well as controlling stimulus patterns from networked microdevices. This position is ideal for candidates with ambitions in data and signal processing, and a strong interest in biological and neuronal systems analysis. Planned secondments include a 3-month stay at Professor Ulrich Hofman's laboratory at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and another 3-month period at NEUROCONN, Germany, for pre-clinical testing of implants.

The candidate will also participate in dissemination activities, including social media promotion, project website updates, LinkedIn groups, YouTube channels, and blogging. The position is based at Tampere University, Finland, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, which offers state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities. The Computational Biophysics and Imaging Group, led by Professor Jari Hyttinen, provides a vibrant multidisciplinary research environment.

Applicants must hold a MSc in biomedical engineering, signal processing, or equivalent, and be eligible for the Doctoral Program at Tampere University. The MSCA Mobility Rule applies, requiring candidates not to have resided or carried out their main activity in Finland for more than 12 months in the past 3 years. Proficiency in English is mandatory, and a language certificate may be requested. The position offers a gross salary of approximately 3950 EUR/month plus family allowance if applicable, in accordance with MSCA funding rules, for a 36-month full-time contract.
