About this position

This PhD project, 'Multi-Source/Multi-Modal Data Fusion for Rapid Disaster Impact Assessment Using Earth Observation and Social Media', aims to advance hazard assessment and impact estimation for disasters, focusing on people and infrastructure. The research will enable faster and more accurate disaster response, improving long-term resilience by enhancing the accuracy and reliability of disaster reporting. The project will generate new data, models, and insights to support future response efforts, addressing bottlenecks in information verification, especially in rapidly evolving and data-sparse environments.

Supervised by Professor Nina Dethlefs and Dr. Viswanath Gunturi at Loughborough University's Department of Computer Science, the project is part of the Informatics for Multi-hazard Risk and Resilience (i-Risk) NERC Doctoral Focal Awards (DFA) in Environmental Sciences. The research leverages artificial intelligence, data science, geospatial analysis, and informatics to fuse data from earth observation and social media sources, providing innovative solutions for disaster risk reduction.

The UKRI studentship offers a tax-free stipend of £21,805 per annum for 3.5 years, plus tuition fees at the UK rate. Excellent international candidates may receive a full international fee waiver, though only up to 30% of studentships can be awarded to international applicants due to funding rules. Both UK and international candidates are eligible to apply. No bench fees are required.

Applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, a very good undergraduate or Master’s degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent) in a relevant subject. EU and overseas applicants must achieve an IELTS score of 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each competency. Minimum English language requirements apply. During the application process, candidates must submit a two-page personal statement (one page on research interests and rationale, one page answering four specific questions), a CV, academic transcripts and degree certificates (translated if not in English), and an IELTS/TOEFL certificate if applicable.

Applications should be made online via the Loughborough University portal, selecting School of Science and quoting reference IRISK-26-LU-09. Candidates are encouraged to contact supervisors by email to discuss project-specific aspects before applying. Interviews are anticipated to be held remotely via Microsoft Teams the week commencing 29 June 2026. The closing date for applications is 9 June 2026, with the project start date in October 2026. For further details about i-Risk, visit the i-Risk website.

For general enquiries, contact [email protected] or [email protected]. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in artificial intelligence, data science, geospatial analysis, and disaster risk reduction, seeking to make a meaningful impact in environmental science and informatics.
