About this position
This PhD project at Coventry University, in partnership with the University of Mons, focuses on the scalable synthesis of metallic nanowires (MNWs) using novel magnetic catalysts and electrochemical deposition techniques. MNWs are highly valued for their exceptional electrical, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties, making them integral to sectors such as wearable electronics, catalysis, energy storage, and environmental remediation. The global market for metallic nanowires is rapidly expanding, highlighting the need for industrially scalable and environmentally friendly synthesis methods.
Traditional synthesis routes for MNWs often rely on templates, aggressive chemicals, complex procedures, and expensive noble metal catalysts, limiting their scalability and environmental sustainability. This project aims to overcome these challenges by developing a template-free, cost-effective, and scalable synthesis route. The approach utilizes low-cost, commercially available electroless plating processes for copper and nickel, with earth-abundant initiators like cobalt and iron, reducing both cost and environmental impact. High-frequency ultrasound will be employed to efficiently dislodge and disperse the synthesized nanowires.
The research objectives include optimizing pre-treatment and activation with magnetic particles, investigating the influence of various parameters (particle type, shape, size, magnetic field strength, solution temperature, reducing agent concentration) on nanowire formation, and optimizing acoustic removal and dispersion. The project will also evaluate the material properties of the nanowires and explore their application in conductive inks, offering alternatives to industrial inks based on critical raw materials.
The successful candidate will benefit from comprehensive research training, technical and professional development, and support from the Doctoral College and Centre for Research Capability and Development. The studentship is part of a co-tutelle programme, with the student spending 1.5 years at Coventry University and 1.5 years at the University of Mons. Funding includes tuition fees and a stipend.
Applicants must hold a minimum of a 2:1 first degree in a relevant discipline, with at least 60% in the project element and overall module average. English language proficiency (IELTS academic overall minimum score of 7.0, with at least 6.5 in each component) is required. Applications should include full supporting documentation, a covering letter, and a 2000-word supporting statement demonstrating relevant expertise and interests.
