About this position
The Mecha(tro)nic System Dynamics division (LMSD) at KU Leuven is offering a PhD position as part of the Flanders Make SBO project NVH-AIMS, focusing on Noise, Vibration and Harshness: Advanced Interface Modelling for mechanical Systems. This research aims to develop novel modelling and characterization methods for accurate system-level NVH prediction in complex mecha(tro)nic assemblies, emphasizing advanced physics-based interface and vibro-acoustic modelling tools. The project addresses the challenge of vibration and noise propagation through multiple structural interfaces, which is crucial for both product performance and broader economic and societal impacts.
As a PhD researcher, you will develop efficient approaches for low-to-high frequency simulation of vibro-acoustic assemblies. This includes coupling and mapping strategies with excitation mechanisms, creating novel compact acoustic radiation models, and combining simulation techniques to cover the audible frequency range. Special attention will be given to model preprocessing, as different frequency ranges require varying levels of model refinement and perceptually noticeable sound differences. The project also investigates hybrid measurement-model based noise radiation estimation by combining novel radiation models with measured vibration fields.
The LMSD division, part of KU Leuven's Department of Mechanical Engineering, comprises over 100 researchers and is recognized for its blend of fundamental academic research and industrially relevant applications. KU Leuven consistently ranks among Europe's top universities and offers a stimulating and ambitious research environment. The research group is well connected to the machine and transportation industry, providing ample opportunities for academic and industrial development.
Applicants should have a Master's degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics, with above-average academic performance. Proficiency in English and basic experience with numerical modelling of vibro-acoustic systems are preferred. The position requires independent research skills, teamwork, and effective communication. The PhD trajectory typically spans four years, with competitive remuneration and access to doctoral training through the KU Leuven Arenberg Doctoral School.
To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, transcripts, proof of English proficiency, reference letters, and an English version of your thesis or publication via the KU Leuven application portal. For further information, contact Dr. Lucas Van Belle or Prof. Dr. Elke Deckers. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, providing a supportive environment for all researchers.
