Open Rank Professorship in Contemporary History (19th–21st Century) University of Fribourg in Switzerland

The University of Fribourg (Switzerland) is recruiting an open rank professorship in Contemporary History (19th–21st century) at 75–80%. The position is based in the Department of Contemporary History and focuses on the entangled and global history of Europe from the 19th to the 21st century.

Research and teaching are expected in areas such as social history, cultural history, gender history, or environmental history, with a particular emphasis on the 19th century. Additional strengths in Public History, Digital Humanities, and Swiss history are considered an advantage.

The post is advertised as either a full professorship or an assistant professorship with tenure track. Applicants must hold a completed doctorate and have several years of postdoctoral research experience in the relevant fields. The university expects an excellent international publication and research record, broad teaching experience, and the ability to teach in German with good knowledge of French. The University of Fribourg is bilingual (French/German), and oral B1 competence in the second language is expected or must be acquired within two years of appointment.

Responsibilities include teaching at bachelor and master level, supervising doctoral researchers, contributing to departmental life, participating in university self-governance, leading staff, and helping secure third-party research funding. Interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration, outreach activities, and a cooperative team-oriented approach are also emphasized.
