Optimising Research Efficacy: Research Literacy and Information Practices of Novice and Expert Researchers Edinburgh Napier University in United Kingdom

This PhD project at Edinburgh Napier University investigates the research literacy and information practices of researchers at varying levels of expertise, from undergraduate honours students to professors. The project aims to address the gap in understanding how expertise influences the effectiveness and efficiency of academic tasks such as literature reviews and presentations. By comparing the information practices and research literacy across different expertise levels, the research seeks to identify optimal practices and the needs of researchers regarding information retrieval and library resources. The academic information landscape is rapidly evolving due to transformative technologies, making it crucial to understand how research literacy can foster resilience and adaptability in academic research.

Proposals should incorporate aspects of participant self-efficacy and its relationship with information practices, and be anchored in Information Science, focusing on human information behaviour, information seeking and use, and/or social informatics. Applicants should have a strong background in Library and Information Science, Media and Communications, Informatics, or a related field, with knowledge of information behaviours, information literacy, and information retrieval.

Essential skills include experience with social science or information science principles, competence in qualitative or quantitative research methods and data analysis, strong communication skills, motivation, independent research skills, and time management. The studentship covers full UK or international tuition fees and provides a standard living allowance at the RCUK rate (£21,383 per annum). International applicants must cover visa application costs and the NHS health surcharge. The application process requires a completed form, CV, two academic references, a two-page research project outline, a one-page statement of motivation and fit, and evidence of English proficiency (IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in each component, or equivalent).
