About this position
The University of Bath, in collaboration with the Centre for Pain Research (CPR), is offering a funded PhD position commencing July 2026. The project, supervised by Dr Tom Barry (University of Bath), Dr Samuel Hipkiss (University of Bath), and Dr Bert Lenaert (University of Maastricht), investigates the role of personal autobiographical stories in the experience and management of chronic pain.
Chronic pain is a pervasive issue that can profoundly affect an individual's sense of self, worldview, and future outlook. This research aims to explore how autobiographical memory—our personal history—shapes responses to pain, influences coping strategies, and impacts mental health. Drawing on advances in mental health research, particularly in depression, the project will examine how personal memories contribute to wellbeing, resilience, and optimism, and how difficulties in recalling such memories are linked to worsening mental health conditions.
Building on prior work in mental health, the project hypothesizes that the way individuals remember their past and use these memories to understand and manage pain is a core mechanism in the emergence, maintenance, and resolution of chronic pain. The doctoral research will be part of a broader ESRC-funded initiative and will employ Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to study the bidirectional relationship between pain and autobiographical memory in everyday life.
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a First Class or high Upper Second Class UK Honours degree (or equivalent) in Psychology or a related field. A relevant master’s qualification is advantageous. Non-UK applicants must meet the English language entry requirement by the application deadline. The position is fully funded through the ESRC studentship; applicants must select 'University of Bath LURS' in the funding section of the application form and quote the project title and lead supervisor in the appropriate sections.
The University of Bath values diversity and inclusivity and encourages applications from under-represented groups. If you have circumstances affecting your educational attainment, you are invited to mention them in your application. Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Tom Barry at [email protected]. Formal applications should be submitted online before May 31, 2026, but early submission is recommended as the position may close earlier if a suitable candidate is found.
