Project Overview
Johne’s disease is a major infectious disease affecting cattle and small ruminants, with significant economic and animal health impacts. Current diagnostic methods are slow, costly, and lack sensitivity for early or subclinical detection. The De Buck Laboratory at the University of Calgary is recruiting a motivated MSc or PhD student to join a cutting-edge research program focused on developing a next-generation, phage-based diagnostic platform for Johne’s disease. This innovative project leverages mycobacteriophages and genetic engineering to create a rapid, highly sensitive, PCR-free diagnostic tool designed for on-farm use, aiming to enable earlier detection and improved disease control.

The De Buck Lab is internationally recognized for its two decades of pioneering research on Johne’s disease, including bacterial pathogenesis, host–pathogen interactions, diagnostics, vaccines, and phage biology. Eligibility and Requirements
Candidates must have a BSc (for MSc) or MSc (for PhD) in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Veterinary Sciences, Biotechnology, or a related field. Essential skills include hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques (such as cloning, PCR-based methods, and bacterial genetics) and solid microbiology skills, ideally with experience working with bacterial pathogens. The ability to work independently and collaboratively is required. Highly desirable qualifications include experience with mycobacteria, bacteriophages, or genetic engineering, familiarity with CRISPR-based approaches, interest in diagnostics development, and motivation to participate in field validation studies and engage with producers.
