About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a 4-year PhD position focused on the experimental characterization of snap fit joints. This research project, coordinated by UGent-MMS and funded by Flanders Make, aims to advance understanding of complex snap fit joints used in construction, automotive, medical devices, and consumer goods. Unlike simple cantilever-based joints, the project investigates advanced snap fit designs found in window profiles, laminate flooring, and injection moulded automotive parts, emphasizing their engagement mechanics and long-term performance under various environmental conditions.

The research will employ state-of-the-art instrumentation techniques, including Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and high-speed imaging, to study loading paths, friction, strain rate effects, geometric nonlinearity, and manufacturing tolerances. Experiments will range from quasi-static to long-term creep loading, with temperature influences considered. The project is a collaboration between Ghent University, KU Leuven, Flanders Make, and ten industry partners, offering a unique opportunity to work closely with both academic and industrial stakeholders.

Prof. Wim Van Paepegem, an expert with 25 years of experience in mechanics of composites and finite element simulations, leads the research group. The group is dynamic and rapidly expanding, currently hosting 8 postdocs and 15 PhD students, with extensive experimental and numerical facilities, including high-performance computing clusters and Linux workstations. The group maintains strong connections with regional composite and additive manufacturing industries and universities, providing exposure to industrial applications and collaborative research.

PhD students benefit from a vibrant academic environment, opportunities to attend and present at international conferences (e.g., ECCM, ICCM), and encouragement to publish in peer-reviewed journals. International exchanges with other universities are possible. Each student receives a personal laptop, private workspace, and access to laboratories. The university offers a net salary starting from 2600 EUR/month (after taxes), with increases for dependents and relevant experience. The cost of study is minimal, with a one-time tuition fee of approximately 1000 EUR and no further charges. Additional benefits include compensation for public transport and bicycle, hospitalization insurance, and access to sports and other facilities.

Applicants must hold a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field, and demonstrate a strong interest in experimental mechanics of materials. Good English proficiency is required; Dutch is not mandatory. The application should include a detailed CV, transcripts, work experience, skills, languages, and references. Applications can be submitted by email to Prof. Wim Van Paepegem or via the online portal. For further information, candidates may contact Prof. Van Paepegem directly or download the research group brochure.

Ghent University provides extensive support for international students, including active student associations and regional platforms for guidance and advice. The work location is easily accessible by public transport, and the university fosters a supportive and collaborative environment for research and personal development.
