About this position
Ghent University is offering a 4-year PhD position focused on the experimental characterization of snap fit joints, a critical connection type used in construction, automotive, medical devices, and consumer goods. The project, coordinated by UGent-MMS and funded by Flanders Make, aims to advance understanding of complex snap fit joints beyond simple cantilever designs, addressing their engagement, long-term performance, and durability under various environmental conditions.
The research will employ advanced instrumentation techniques such as Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and high-speed imaging, extending tests from quasi-static to long-term creep loading with temperature influences. The project is a collaboration between Ghent University, KU Leuven, Flanders Make, and ten industry partners, providing a unique opportunity to work closely with both academic and industrial stakeholders.
Applicants must hold a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. A strong interest in experimental mechanics of materials and collaborative research is essential. Good English proficiency is required, while Dutch is not mandatory. The research group, led by Professor Wim Van Paepegem, offers access to extensive experimental and numerical facilities, including high-performance computing clusters and Linux workstations. The group is dynamic, with 8 postdocs and 15 PhD students currently, and a strong track record of successful PhD completions.
PhD students receive a net salary starting from 2600 EUR/month, with increases for dependents and relevant experience. The cost of study is minimal, with a one-time tuition fee of approximately 1000 EUR and no further charges. Additional benefits include compensation for public transport and bicycle, hospitalization insurance, and access to sports and other university facilities. International students are supported by active student associations and regional platforms.
Successful candidates will have opportunities to attend and present at international conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and participate in international exchanges. The research environment is collaborative, with all PhD students and staff located in the same wing, and laboratories in a separate wing. The project emphasizes both academic excellence and practical industry relevance, preparing graduates for careers in research, industry, and academia.
To apply, candidates should prepare a detailed CV in Dutch or English, including personal details, education, transcripts, work experience, skills, languages, and references. Applications should be sent by email to Prof. Wim Van Paepegem. For further information, candidates can visit the research group website or download the research brochure. The application deadline is unspecified, so early submission is encouraged.
