About this position
Ghent University is offering a 4-year PhD position focused on the finite element simulation of snap fit joints, a critical connection type used in construction elements, automotive parts, medical devices, and more. The project, coordinated by UGent-MMS and funded by Flanders Make, aims to advance the understanding and optimization of complex snap fit joints, which are increasingly important for disassembly, recycling, and repair. Unlike simple cantilever-based snap fits, this research targets advanced joints found in window profiles, laminate flooring, and injection-moulded automotive parts, addressing their complex loading paths, friction, strain rate effects, geometric nonlinearity, and manufacturing tolerances.
The PhD research will develop advanced finite element analysis techniques to study both the engagement and long-term performance of snap fit joints, including their ability to maintain integrity over years despite temperature fluctuations, creep, and environmental ageing. The project involves collaboration with KU Leuven, Flanders Make, and ten industry partners from construction, automotive, and consumer goods sectors. The successful candidate will investigate different solver strategies (implicit/explicit) and create computational methods for automated optimization of snap fit geometry and performance, working closely with other PhD students and postdocs in a dynamic, expanding research group.
Applicants must hold a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field. A strong interest in computational mechanics of materials and enthusiasm for collaborative research between academia and industry are essential. Familiarity with mechanics of materials and experimental or computational techniques is expected. Good English proficiency in writing and speaking is required; Dutch is not mandatory.
The research group offers access to extensive experimental and numerical facilities, including Linux workstations and a high-performance computing cluster with over 2000 cores. Opportunities exist for international conference participation, publication in peer-reviewed journals, and possible international exchange. The group currently includes 8 postdocs and 15 PhD students, with a strong track record of successful PhD completions.
Funding includes a net salary starting from 2600 EUR/month (after taxes), with increases for dependents and seniority. The cost for the PhD study is limited to a one-time tuition fee of approximately 1000 EUR, with the remainder of the study free of charge. Additional benefits include compensation for public transport and bicycle, hospitalization insurance, and access to sports and other university facilities. Support for international students is provided through active student associations and regional platforms.
To apply, candidates should prepare a detailed CV in Dutch or English, including personal details, education, transcripts, work experience, skills (finite element software, programming languages, communication skills), mastered languages, and references. Applications should be sent by email to Prof. Wim Van Paepegem ([email protected]). For further information, visit the research group website or contact Prof. Van Paepegem directly. Additional resources, including a research brochure, are available online.
