About this position

Two PhD positions and one postdoctoral position are available at the University of Bern in the area of planetary science, planetary geodesy, asteroid evolution, and small-body research. The opportunities are tied to ESA’s upcoming RAMSES mission and the Swiss National Science Foundation project on characterising near-Earth asteroid Apophis using mission data.

PhD 1: Numerical Modeling of Asteroid Evolution — This project focuses on collisional evolution, crater formation, regolith processes, tidal deformation, and surface reshaping of Apophis. Applicants should have a master’s degree in (astro-)physics, astronomy, planetary science, or a related field, plus strong numerical modeling and programming skills. Experience with SPH/N-body simulations, granular physics, or geophysical modeling is an advantage.

PhD 2: Space Geodesy for Asteroids — This project centers on gravity field determination, rotation state, interior structure, and geodetic parameter estimation for Apophis using radiometric tracking, laser ranging, and optical camera data. A completed master’s thesis in astronomy, geodesy, physics, or a related topic is expected; experience with orbit and gravity field determination is beneficial.

Postdoc: Space Research and Planetary Sciences / Astronomical Institute — The postdoctoral project develops a numerical Apophis Reference Model integrating shape, rotation, surface properties, and interior mass distribution. A PhD in (astro-)physics, astronomy, planetary science, geology, or a related field is required, along with scientific programming skills and a strong interest in planetary sciences and small-body research.

All positions are fully funded at the University of Bern and offer a collaborative international research environment, access to computational resources, and participation in a high-impact ESA mission. The PhD positions are full-time fixed-term roles with salary following University of Bern guidelines; the postdoc is funded for 2 years with a possible 1-year extension. The application deadline for all three positions is 2026-06-30.

Applications should include a motivation letter, CV, degree documents/transcripts, and two referees’ names and email addresses. Submit the application by email to the contact person listed for the specific position.
