PhD and Postdoctoral Opportunities in Low-Carbon Concrete and Civil Engineering at McMaster University McMaster University in Canada

McMaster University’s Department of Civil Engineering is advertising three PhD positions and one postdoctoral position in a joint project with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) focused on low-carbon concrete and emerging supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs).

The research theme includes CO2 mineralization, sustainable material innovation, microstructural analysis, durability, mechanical performance, and lifecycle assessment for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment. The project is aligned with Canada’s net-zero concrete roadmap and offers access to major facilities such as the Applied Dynamics Lab, the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy, and the NRC Construction Research Centre.

PhD applicants should have a completed master’s degree by the start date and an interest in concrete technology. Familiarity with characterization techniques for cementitious materials across fresh, hardening, and hardened states is desirable.

Postdoctoral applicants should hold a PhD in civil engineering or a related field and have strong expertise in cementitious materials, experimental testing, hydration kinetics, microstructural assessment (e.g., calorimetry, TGA, FTIR, SEM, XRD), rheology, mechanical properties, durability, and life cycle assessment.
