About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a PhD Assistant position in the Department of Interdisciplinary Study of Law, Private Law and Business Law, within the Faculty of Law and Criminology. This role is designed for candidates interested in pursuing academic research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation in the field of law & technology, with a strong focus on private and business law in Belgian and European contexts.

At least 50% of the appointment is dedicated to research activities, while the remainder involves assisting with teaching and departmental services. The position offers a two-year contract, renewable twice for two years, subject to positive evaluation, with a maximum appointment duration of six years as per Flemish Higher Education regulations. The earliest start date is 1 October 2026. Remuneration follows salary scale AAP3, and staff benefits include paid leave, training opportunities, bicycle commuting reimbursement, and ecocheques.

Applicants must hold a Master in Law or be graduating by July 2026. For diplomas awarded outside the EU, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) is required. Candidates should demonstrate interest and knowledge in Law & Technology, Belgian and European Law, and possess excellent teaching and communication skills. Teaching experience or participation in relevant training and conferences is recommended. The ability to work independently and collaboratively is essential. For foreign diplomas not in Dutch, French, German, or English, a translation must be provided.
