PhD: Building Societal Resilience Against False Information on Emerging Nuclear Technologies Belgian Nuclear Research Centre in Belgium

This funded PhD opportunity at the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK CEN) addresses the urgent challenge of false information in the context of emerging nuclear technologies. The project investigates how misinformation and disinformation shape public perception, trust, and decision-making regarding innovations such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). In an era of rapid digital information flows and AI-generated media, the spread of false narratives can undermine public confidence in science and technology, particularly in the nuclear sector.

As a doctoral researcher, you will develop and test evidence-based communication strategies to build societal resilience against misleading narratives. The research integrates communication science, social psychology, and nuclear research, employing a mixed-methods approach that includes digital analytics, experiments, surveys, interviews, and discourse analysis. Key interventions such as content moderation, debunking, and prebunking will be assessed for their effectiveness in countering false information.

The project is embedded within Factcheck.vlaanderen and the Media, Information & Persuasion Lab at KU Leuven, leveraging AI-supported tools for digital data collection and experimental design. At SCK CEN, you will be part of the Science and Technology Studies (STS) group, recognized for its expertise in nuclear risk communication, and supported by the Communication (COM) unit. The outcomes will inform SCK CEN’s communication strategy and contribute to European and international frameworks, including the European Industrial Alliance for SMRs and IAEA communication initiatives.

Applicants must hold a Master of Sciences degree or equivalent in social sciences and demonstrate excellent English language skills. The position offers a unique multidisciplinary research environment, access to innovative facilities, and participation in internal training courses through the SCK CEN Academy.
