About this position
The Institute of Philosophy at KU Leuven is offering a four-year PhD position as part of the ERC-funded project TRANSFORM: “The Late Scholastic Transformation of Hylomorphism. Philosophical Discussions of Form and Matter in Context, 1400-1600.” This project, led by Professor Russell Friedman, aims to investigate key issues in hylomorphic philosophy during the 15th and 16th centuries, including the actuality and dimensionality of prime matter, corpuscularianism, and the causality of substantial form. The research will contribute to a deeper understanding of the evolution of matter and form theories leading up to the 17th century.
The successful candidate will prepare a dissertation focusing either on the development of hylomorphic theories in Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries or on their transfer from Italy to the Iberian peninsula. As a member of the TRANSFORM team, the PhD student will participate in collaborative project activities such as team meetings, seminars, workshops, and conferences, and engage with the De Wulf-Mansion Centre for Ancient, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, where the project is based. The working language is English.
Applicants must hold (or expect to hold before the start date) a Master’s degree in Philosophy or a closely related field with documented philosophical training and excellent academic results. Admission requirements for the doctoral program at KU Leuven must be met. Strong knowledge of later-medieval scholastic Latin is essential, and proficiency in Latin paleography, as well as reading knowledge of French, German, Italian, or Spanish, will strengthen the application. Skills in database or website management are advantageous. Candidates should be willing to work collaboratively and focus on the project’s research topic.
The position offers a four-year doctoral fellowship under KU Leuven’s standard conditions, including social and health benefits, office space, and a research budget. The preferred starting date is October 1, 2026. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, and provides support for accessibility and other needs.
To apply, candidates should submit their application via the KU Leuven application tool, including a cover letter, CV, transcripts, English proficiency test results (if applicable), and a motivational statement. For further information, contact Professor Russell Friedman at [email protected].
