About this position

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, a leading institution in marine research, invites applications for a PhD candidate position in Biogeochemical Modelling within the Ocean Dynamics research unit. This opportunity is part of the ERC-funded Synergy Project WHIRLS, which investigates the influence of ocean fine-scale whirls on climate and ecosystems, focusing on the Agulhas Current System—a global hotspot for eddy activity, ocean-atmosphere heat exchange, and marine productivity.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of scientists and numerical modellers, contributing to the numerical modelling, analysis, and interpretation of marine biogeochemistry simulations using the NEMO model. The research will emphasize the role of (sub)mesoscale dynamics in biogeochemical processes in the Agulhas region, particularly in the context of climate change. Fine-scale ocean processes impact nutrient and oxygen fluxes, shape ocean productivity, and modulate the ocean’s capacity to absorb and store carbon, all with significant climate implications.

The project offers flexibility in scientific and methodological focus, allowing the candidate to develop their research interests and strengths in collaboration with the team. The work will involve global ocean biogeochemistry model configurations with enhanced resolution in the Agulhas region, and the candidate will benefit from coordinated international collaboration with partners in France, Sweden, South Africa, and Germany.

Applicants should hold a completed master's degree in oceanography, marine sciences, climate science, or a related field. Essential skills include experience in data analysis using programming languages (e.g., Python) and a strong command of English. Additional desirable qualifications are experience in ocean dynamics, biogeochemical modelling, programming (e.g., FORTRAN), analysis of large datasets, and diagnostic development. The position requires teamwork, open-mindedness, and scientific creativity.

GEOMAR offers excellent work-life balance, including mobile working options, flexible hours, vacation courses for children, and support in finding daycare. Employees enjoy 30 vacation days plus additional time off at Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, a company pension plan, and capital-forming benefits. The position is part-time (75% FTE), funded for 3 years, with salary up to class 13 TVöD-Bund according to qualifications.

GEOMAR is committed to increasing the proportion of female scientists and encourages applications from qualified female academics. The institution is an equal opportunity employer and gives preference to qualified disabled applicants. Application photos are not required. The research center is part of the Helmholtz Association, Germany’s largest scientific organisation.

Applications must be submitted online by 19th April 2026. For further information, contact Dr. Lavinia Patara at [email protected] and refer to the keyword “WHIRLS-BG”. More details about GEOMAR and the Helmholtz Association can be found at www.geomar.de and www.helmholtz.de.
