The Department of Biology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim is offering a fully funded PhD position in Biological Oceanography, focusing on zooplankton and its role in the oceanic carbon pump. This PhD project is part of the strategic Polhavet 2050 program and aims to advance understanding of how zooplankton contribute to carbon sequestration in the oceans. Oceans have absorbed 30–50% of anthropogenic CO₂ since the industrial revolution, playing a crucial role in mitigating global warming. However, the mechanisms of carbon transport into the deep ocean remain poorly understood. The research will investigate zooplankton's contribution to carbon sequestration through vertical migrations, utilizing optical and acoustic instruments to observe and quantify their dynamics in the water column. A key objective is to develop and improve physiological proxies and endpoints for estimating zooplankton respiration and its impact on oceanic carbon fluxes.

The position offers comprehensive training in field observations, advanced instrumentation, experiments with zooplankton organisms, and physiological analyses within an international research environment. The successful candidate will be supervised by Associate Professor Jose Landeira and co-supervisor Associate Professor Kang Nian Yap. Duties include completing doctoral education, conducting high-quality research, publishing in peer-reviewed international journals, participating in departmental and international activities, and being prepared for changes in work duties.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in biology, ocean resources, oceanography, or equivalent, corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. Master students may apply if the degree is completed and documented before starting the position and no later than 01.09.2026. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's grading scale or equivalent. Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory. Experience in marine ecology, physiology, and/or oceanography is required. Preferred qualifications include experience in oceanographic cruises, zooplankton sampling, experiments with living plankton, knowledge of animal physiology, and competence in scientific programming (R, Python, or similar). Personal qualities such as independence, structured work, motivation, flexibility, and resilience are emphasized.

The position is fully funded for three years, with a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum and a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund.
