About this position
Maastricht University is seeking a PhD candidate to join the Department of Circular Chemical Engineering (CCE) within the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE). The position focuses on advancing the circular plastics economy by investigating how contaminants affect the chemical recycling of plastics, specifically through the pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste streams. The successful candidate will design and conduct laboratory-scale pyrolysis experiments using both industrial and model plastic waste mixtures, analyze the resulting products with chromatographic, spectroscopic, and elemental techniques, and study the influence of impurities on depolymerization mechanisms and product composition. The research aims to provide fundamental insights that will help optimize chemical recycling processes and contribute to sustainable solutions for the plastics industry. The project is part of a national research initiative and is embedded in the Chemical Recycling group at CCE, offering opportunities for collaboration with academic and industrial partners. The candidate will also participate in teaching and mentoring activities within the CCE program. The position offers a supportive, international research environment at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen, with access to extensive university facilities and a vibrant interdisciplinary community. Employment includes a 12-month contract with the possibility of a three-year extension, a competitive salary, holiday and year-end bonuses, generous vacation days, flexible working arrangements, and additional benefits such as a pension plan and sports facilities. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or a closely related field, experience with relevant laboratory techniques, and strong communication skills in English. The university values diversity and inclusion and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply. The application deadline is November 23, 2024, and candidates should submit a CV, motivation letter, and contact information for two referees via the provided application link.
