About this position

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate position in Electrohydrometallurgy and Electrodialysis for Battery Recycling. NTNU is a leading technical-scientific university located in Trondheim, Norway, with a strong commitment to professional education and research for a sustainable future. The university hosts 9,000 employees and 43,000 students, fostering a vibrant academic environment.

This PhD project is part of NTNU's strategy to advance the green shift and fulfill the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by developing energy-efficient and sustainable process technologies. The research mission is to become a global leader in hydrometallurgical processing, focusing on obtaining critical raw materials such as sodium, lithium, cobalt, manganese, rare earth elements, nickel, and copper. The project addresses the urgent need for sustainable mining and recycling to secure critical materials for modern equipment and food production, while minimizing environmental impacts.

The successful candidate will conduct research on electrodialysis for the separation of metals in battery recycling, collaborating with MSc students and engaging in international partnerships with universities and industry. The position includes teaching responsibilities and active participation in research group activities. The employment period is three years, with a desired start date as soon as possible and no later than October 2026.

Key duties:

  • Complete doctoral education and obtain a PhD.
  • Conduct high-quality research within the project framework.
  • Publish academic and popular science articles.
  • Participate in international conferences and research stays.
  • Perform experiments in electrochemical separation of critical metals, primarily from battery recycling.
  • Present research at national and international conferences.
  • Contribute to a collaborative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary research environment.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in Chemical Engineering with emphasis on electrodialysis for battery recycling, equivalent to a five-year Norwegian course (120 credits at master's level). Master students may apply if the degree is completed and documented before starting the position and no later than 01.10.2026. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better according to NTNU's grading scale, or equivalent. Candidates with weaker grades may be considered if they demonstrate particular suitability for PhD education. Admission requirements for the faculty's Doctoral Programme must be met. Fluent oral and written English skills are essential. Experience in electrodialysis for battery recycling, especially LFP, and publications in recognized scientific journals are required. Preferred qualifications include experience in synthesis of materials for ion removal, laboratory work, mass and energy balance, techno-economic assessment, circular chemical engineering, process system design, value-chain evaluations, and academic projects with industries.

Funding: The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum for three years, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund deducted. Additional benefits include working capital for project implementation, favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and free Norwegian language training at basic level (A2).

Application process: Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no by the deadline of 24 May 2026. Required documents include transcripts and diplomas, CV, copy or draft of Master's thesis, documentation of completed Master's degree, project outline, motivation letter, publications, certificates, and names/contact information of two referees. If invited to interview, candidates must bring certified copies of certificates and diplomas.

NTNU values diversity and aims to reflect the diversity of society in its workforce. The university offers a supportive and inclusive working environment, career guidance, and access to employee benefits. The city of Trondheim provides excellent opportunities for education, culture, and family life, with a high quality of life and low crime rates.
