About this position

Kuenneth Research Group at the University of Bayreuth is recruiting a Graduate Researcher / PhD Candidate (m/f/d) in materials informatics and computational materials science. The position sits at the intersection of materials science, polymer science, and computer science, with a strong focus on using AI to design sustainable polymeric materials for electronics and packaging.

The project is part of an EU Horizon Europe research initiative. The successful candidate will work on data extraction, curation, and structuring for machine learning, build and implement machine learning models, large language models (LLMs), and autonomous AI agents, and help connect computational methods with experimental workflows. This is a research-intensive role for someone interested in data-driven materials discovery and autonomous scientific research.

Eligibility highlights: an above-average master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Natural Sciences, or a related field; strong Python programming skills; knowledge of polymer and materials science; curiosity, creativity, independence, motivation, and good communication skills in English or German.

Funding: full-time TV-L E13 employment for up to 3.5 years, with the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree while gaining access to industrial and international contacts. The post also offers flexible working hours and the option to work from home under the applicable service agreement.

How to apply: submit your application through the University of Bayreuth portal and use the password MI2026. For questions, contact Christopher Künneth at [email protected].
