About this position

The Department of Electronic Systems at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate in Nanophotonics for Health Monitoring. NTNU is Norway’s leading technical-scientific university, with a strong focus on professional education and research, and is headquartered in Trondheim. The university offers a vibrant academic environment with 9,000 employees and 43,000 students, fostering knowledge for a better world.

This PhD position is embedded within the Nanoelectronics and Photonics Group, supervised by Associate Professor Angelos Xomalis. The research project centers on the optics of wearable metasurfaces and their applications in health monitoring. The candidate will fabricate and characterize wearable optical metasurfaces and photonic crystals, focusing on understanding complex light interactions with photonic devices and conducting in vivo characterization using advanced spectroscopic modules. The project aims to push the boundaries of non-invasive cardiovascular monitoring using nanophotonics, with research performed in close collaboration with St’ Olavs, Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging, and Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

Key duties include nanofabrication and optical characterization of metasurfaces and photonic crystals, performing in vivo health monitoring measurements, and engaging in career-promoting work in NTNU NanoLab Cleanroom. The candidate will collaborate with an international network of scientific partners, report findings at conferences and in scientific articles, and participate in the Electronic and Telecommunications PhD program.

Applicants must have a relevant academic background in experimental photonics, materials science, physics, electrical engineering, health monitoring, sensing, physical chemistry, or nanotechnology. A Master’s degree or equivalent is required, corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at the master's level. Strong academic performance (B or better on NTNU’s grading scale) is expected. Preferred qualifications include experience in spectroscopies, optical characterization of nanomaterials, nanofabrication processes, cleanroom activities, wearable sensors, and proficiency in English.

The position offers a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum, with a 2% statutory pension fund deduction. The employment period is four years, including 25% career-promoting work. Additional benefits include working capital for project implementation, a mentor programme, and favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. NTNU provides an open and inclusive working environment, career guidance, and employee benefits.

NTNU values diversity and aims to reflect societal diversity in its workforce. The university encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds and is committed to gender equality and inclusion. The city of Trondheim offers a rich cultural scene, excellent welfare services, and opportunities for education, nature, and family life.

To apply, submit your application and required documents electronically via Jobbnorge.no by August 10, 2026. Required documents include transcripts, diplomas, CV, Master’s thesis or draft, project proposal, motivation letter, publications, certificates, and contact information for three referees. All documents must be in English. If invited to interview, bring certified copies of certificates and diplomas.

For further information, refer to the full position description and application link provided. NTNU is committed to responsible research assessment and recognizes a wide range of academic contributions.
