About this position

The Department of Engineering Cybernetics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position focused on the optimal utilization of power components and grids using digital twin technology. This role is part of the UPGriD project, which aims to develop advanced tools for real-time dynamic thermal rating, virtual sensing, anomaly detection, and predictive modeling of power-grid components. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, combining artificial intelligence, cybernetics, numerical modeling, and electric power engineering, with close collaboration between NTNU, SINTEF Energy Research, and industry partners.

The PhD candidate will contribute to several technical work packages, developing methods applicable to transformers, power cables, and distribution substations. The project addresses the challenge of increasing the utilization of existing power-grid infrastructure while maintaining reliability and security of supply. Current capacity assessments are often conservative; UPGriD seeks to improve these by integrating dynamic factors such as load history, ambient temperature, soil conditions, cooling, and component degradation into digital twin models.

The research will focus on hybrid analysis and modeling, combining physics-based and data-driven models, sparse measurements, and domain knowledge. Key questions include optimal sensor placement, reconstructing high-resolution temperature fields from limited data, and building predictive models that account for uncertainty and unmodeled effects. The candidate will have opportunities for scientific development, international collaboration, and industry engagement.

Supervision will be provided by Professor Adil Rasheed. The position offers a gross salary starting from NOK 550,800 per annum, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is 3 years, and the candidate will have access to employee benefits and discounts. NTNU provides a supportive, diverse, and inclusive working environment, with career guidance and a mentor program for new employees.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Mathematics, Cybernetics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent, corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. Master's students may apply but must document completion before starting. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's grading scale or equivalent. Good oral and written English skills are mandatory. Strong skills in partial differential equations, numerical methods, optimization, and programming are required. Preferred qualifications include experience with finite element methods, numerical simulation, machine learning, data-driven modeling, scientific machine learning or physics-informed AI, and programming skills in Python or C++. Analytical and problem-solving skills, motivation, and ability to work independently and in teams are emphasized.

To apply, submit your application electronically via Jobbnorge.no by the deadline of 15 June 2026. Attach your CV, transcripts, Master's thesis, publications, and names of at least two referees. Ensure all documents are in Norwegian, a Scandinavian language, or English. If invited to interview, bring certified copies of certificates and diplomas. For questions about the position, contact Professor Adil Rasheed at [email protected]. For recruitment process inquiries, contact HR Consultant Berit Dahl at [email protected].

Trondheim, the location of NTNU, is a modern European city known for its rich cultural scene, technological innovation, and high quality of life. NTNU is committed to diversity, equality, and creating knowledge for a better world.
