About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate position in seaweed hydrodynamics within the Department of Marine Technology, located in Trondheim, Norway. NTNU is a leading technical-scientific university with a strong focus on professional education and research, hosting over 9,000 employees and 43,000 students. The university is committed to creating knowledge for a better world and offers a vibrant, inclusive academic environment.

This PhD project is part of SFI Seaweed, a Centre for Research-based Innovation funded primarily by the Research Council of Norway and managed by SINTEF Ocean. The centre brings together industry and research partners from marine technology, cybernetics, biology, biotechnology, and product development. The research focuses on hydrodynamic loads on seaweed and macroalgae, aiming to advance the industrialization of seaweed production and the design of floating seaweed production facilities. The main cost driver in seaweed farms is the longlines, which can span hundreds of kilometers and are exposed to waves and currents. The hydroelastic behavior of seaweed is not well understood, and current hydrodynamic load models are insufficient. This project seeks to improve understanding of seaweed-laden longlines under sea loads and develop robust hydrodynamic load models.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Pål Lader and will join the Marine Structures research group. Duties include completing doctoral education, conducting high-quality research, publishing academic and popular science work, participating in international conferences or research stays, teaching, and engaging in SFI Seaweed activities. The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is three years, and the position is conditional on external funding.

Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree in marine hydrodynamics or equivalent, corresponding to a five-year Norwegian master program (120 credits at master's level). Master students may apply if their degree is completed by 01.09.2026. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's grading scale. Experience in relevant experimental work and excellent oral and written English skills are essential. Preferred qualifications include formal skills in hydroelasticity, practical work experience, and proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Personal qualities such as independence, motivation, analytical skills, and flexibility are highly valued.

NTNU offers an exciting job with societal impact, career guidance, and employee benefits. The university values diversity and aims to reflect the broader society, promoting equality and inclusion. Trondheim, the tech capital of Norway, provides a rich cultural scene, excellent welfare services, and opportunities for education and family life.

To apply, submit your application and all required attachments electronically via Jobbnorge.no by the deadline of 17 April 2026. Required documents include transcripts and diplomas, CV, copy or draft of master's thesis, motivation letter, and names/contact information of referees. If invited to interview, bring certified copies of certificates and diplomas. For questions about the position, contact Professor Pål Lader at [email protected].

For more information, visit NTNU's website and the application portal.
