About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD position in Semantic Web for Autonomous and Adaptable Urban Services, based in the Department of Design in Trondheim. This PhD position is part of the interdisciplinary UrbanBREATH project, funded by the Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) Partnership. The project aims to measure, model, and mitigate air pollution in urban environments by integrating low-cost sensing, community engagement, and data-driven policy recommendations. The research will focus on developing semantically enriched urban services to improve air quality and optimize ventilation systems for various urban stakeholders, including residents, landlords, infrastructure owners, utility companies, and recycling companies. The goal is to create intelligent automation strategies that enhance air quality while reducing energy consumption and the carbon footprint of buildings.

As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the research, development, and demonstration of methodologies for building autonomous and adaptive urban services. You will collaborate with UrbanBREATH project partners, participate in the Knowledge-based Engineering and Knowledge-driven Systems research group, and disseminate your findings through academic publications and popular science channels. International activities such as conferences and research stays at partner institutions are encouraged.

The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. Additional benefits include favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, free basic Norwegian language training, working capital for project implementation, a mentor programme, and access to employee benefits. The employment period is three years, and admission to the PhD programme in Engineering is required within three months of the contract start date.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in industrial ICT, information systems, IoT, HVAC engineering, sustainable design in construction, or equivalent, with 120 credits at the master's level. Master students may apply if the degree is completed before starting the position and no later than spring 2026. A strong academic background (grade B or better on NTNU's scale) is required, and candidates with weaker grades may be considered if they demonstrate particular suitability for PhD education. Essential skills include mathematics, programming, information systems, and excellent English proficiency. Preferred qualifications include programming experience (Python, OOA/OOD/OOP), semantic modeling, knowledge representation, automated reasoning, familiarity with AI frameworks and APIs, and skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language. Personal qualities such as independence, structured work, goal-setting, communication, resilience, curiosity, motivation, analytical skills, and flexibility are highly valued.
