The candidate will also have opportunities to collect new data and test methodological developments.

The PhD project is associated with NTNU's HYPSO satellite programme and includes international collaboration with the Earth and Planetary Research Group (University of Stirling, Scotland) and the Finnish Environment Institute. The work is linked to NTNU's Freshwater Research Group and the thematic research area of Observation Pyramid, offering a rich interdisciplinary environment and access to a larger network of researchers.

The position is full-time and temporary, with a desired start date as soon as possible and no later than November 1, 2026. The doctoral education is expected to be completed in four years, including one year of teaching and six months of coursework. Duties include writing 2–3 academic publications, defending a PhD thesis, active participation in research groups, attending international conferences, contributing to relevant courses, and optionally supervising master's students.

Applicants must hold a relevant Master's degree in natural, environmental, or computational sciences (e.g., remote sensing, marine biology, aquatic sciences), equivalent to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at master's level. Master students may apply if the degree is completed before starting. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's grading scale. Good oral and written English skills are essential. Preferred qualifications include experience in satellite remote sensing, programming (Python, Julia), hyperspectral imaging, spectroscopy, signal processing, and bio-optics laboratory and field work.

The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is three years for doctoral work, with the possibility of up to one year of career development activities.
