Leiden University invites applications for a four-year PhD position focused on circadian regulation of biofilm development in bacteria. This opportunity is part of the ERC-funded MicroClock program, which explores chronomicrobiology—a field bridging microbiology and chronobiology. The project builds on the recent discovery of a circadian clock in Bacillus subtilis and aims to uncover spatio-temporal gene expression in bacterial biofilms using molecular biology tools, optogenetics, and advanced microscopy. The research will be conducted in collaboration with consortium partners at LMU Munich and John Innes Centre, offering a highly interdisciplinary and international environment.

The PhD candidate will learn chronobiological principles and research methods, contributing to the understanding of spatial aspects of circadian systems in bacteria.
