About this position

Maastricht University invites applications for a PhD position investigating the role of self-esteem variability in psychopathology, as part of the New Science of Mental Disorders (NSMD) consortium. This project aims to understand how moment-to-moment shifts in self-esteem relate to mental health outcomes and whether interventions targeting self-esteem variability can improve these outcomes. The research will be conducted within the Department of Clinical Psychological Science at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience, in close collaboration with supervisors Professor Carolien Martijn and Dr. Ria Hoekstra, and other NSMD consortium colleagues.

The NSMD consortium, led by Maastricht University and including partner institutions such as the University of Amsterdam and Leiden University, adopts a network-based approach to mental health problems. The project focuses on dynamic processes underlying mental health, specifically examining self-esteem fluctuations and their association with negative mood, worrying, and fear of negative evaluation. The candidate will analyze existing datasets and collect new intensive longitudinal data using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) within a single-case experimental design (SCED) intervention study.

As a PhD candidate, you will design and conduct research using advanced statistical and network analysis methods, contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations, and participate in teaching activities within Psychology and Brain Science programs. The position offers a stimulating, international environment with opportunities for independent work and professional development.

Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s and (Research) Master’s degree in psychology, ideally with a specialization in clinical or social psychology. Experience with advanced statistical analysis, network analyses, and longitudinal data is preferred, or a strong interest in learning these methods. Skills in EMA and SCED are considered assets. Excellent English proficiency is required; Dutch language skills are advantageous. Candidates must reside near Maastricht or be willing to relocate.

The position offers a 12-month contract (1.0 FTE) with the prospect of a 3-year extension, a gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881, 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, 29 vacation days, four additional days off, and the possibility to accrue up to 12 extra days. Additional benefits include a pension plan via ABP, company fitness schemes, and access to university sports facilities.

Interviews are scheduled for 21 & 22 July (first round) and 28 & 29 July (second round), with an assignment (written or presentation) as part of the selection process. The application deadline is 5 July 2026. For more information, contact Professor Carolien Martijn or Dr. Ria Hoekstra. Apply online via the provided link.

Maastricht University is committed to diversity and inclusion, fostering a collaborative and supportive academic community. The Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience explores the human brain and behavior, connecting perspectives to contribute to society. Join a vibrant research environment in the heart of Europe and help advance the understanding of mental health.
