About this position
The Department of Energy and Process Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for up to four PhD positions in Experimental Fluid Mechanics, focusing on turbulent mixing and combustion of zero carbon fuels. This research is part of major projects funded by the ERC Synergy Grant HYROPE and the EU Project InsigH2t, with collaborations involving ETH Zurich, IMFT/CNRS Toulouse, and TU Darmstadt.
The project aims to address the fundamental physics of turbulent mixing and combustion for hydrogen and ammonia, including their blends. These fuels present unique challenges compared to conventional fossil fuels, such as highly diffusive and reactive hydrogen and ammonia’s role as a hydrogen carrier with poor reactivity and potential for NOx emissions. The research will investigate turbulent mixing strategies, the effect of pressure, flame stability, and emission control, using advanced experimental facilities and laser diagnostic methods (PIV, PLIF, chemiluminescence, emissions analysis).
As a PhD candidate, you will join the Thermofluids research group at EPT, working under the supervision of Professor James Dawson, Professor Jason Hearst, Dr. Håkon Nygård, and Dr. Eirik Æsøy. You will design and optimize experiments, conduct detailed measurements, develop new analysis methods, collaborate with international partners, and disseminate your findings in scholarly journals and conferences. The position offers opportunities for career development, mentorship, and participation in leading international conferences.
Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree (engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or equivalent) corresponding to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at the master’s level. Master students may apply if their degree is completed by September 2026. A strong academic background (grade B or better) is required, with flexibility for candidates who can demonstrate particular suitability. Admission to the faculty’s Doctoral Programme is mandatory. Essential skills include fluid mechanics, combustion, programming (MATLAB, C, Python), and academic English. Preferred experience includes advanced experimental methods (PIV, PLIF, imaging, hot-wire, pressure measurements) and CAD.
The position is full-time for three years, with a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800 and a 2% statutory pension fund contribution. Additional benefits include employee perks, free basic Norwegian language training, and favorable terms as a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. NTNU offers a diverse, inclusive, and supportive environment, with initiatives such as EPT Women in Science to promote equality and career development for female researchers.
To apply, submit your application via Jobbnorge.no by 14 May 2026, including a motivation letter, CV, qualifications document, transcripts, diplomas, Master’s thesis (or draft), and contact information for three referees. All documents must be in English. If invited to interview, bring certified copies of certificates and diplomas. For questions, contact Professor James Dawson ([email protected]) or HR Consultant Martha Aftret Karlsvik ([email protected]).
NTNU is located in Trondheim, a modern European city known for its rich cultural scene, tech industry, and high quality of life. The university is committed to creating knowledge for a better world and offers a stimulating environment for research and professional growth.
