PhD: Development of automatic monitoring of dairy cow and calf behaviour Nord University in Norway

Nord University’s Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture invites applications for a three-year PhD position focused on the development of automatic monitoring systems for dairy cow and calf behaviour. This innovative project addresses one of the most debated welfare challenges in dairy farming: early cow–calf separation. By leveraging AI-based tools to measure cow–calf interactions, the research aims to generate new scientific insights into cow-calf contact (CCC) systems and contribute to future welfare policy for housing and management of dairy cattle.

The successful candidate will join the Animal Science, Production and Welfare division, working in a creative and collegial environment at Steinkjer, Trøndelag, Norway. The project includes an animal trial at the Livestock Production Research Centre, NMBU, Ås, Norway, and offers opportunities for research stays, courses, and conferences. The position is full-time and temporary, with a contract duration of three years.

Applicants should hold a completed master’s degree in ethology, animal or veterinary science, computer engineering, or a closely related discipline. Essential skills include good English proficiency (written and oral), experience in farm animal trials, knowledge of fundamental ethology, familiarity with big-data workflows or modelling, and strong communication and interpersonal abilities. Candidates who already possess a PhD degree are not eligible.

Funding for the position includes an annual salary of NOK 550,800, with additional benefits such as pension, insurance, flexible working hours, and access to an active university sports team.
