About this position

Technical University of Munich is advertising a PhD / Doctoral Researcher position in artificial intelligence for the built environment at the Chair of Computing in Civil and Building Engineering, TUM School of Engineering and Design.

The research spans several interconnected topics: Large Language Models (LLMs) and Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) for the built environment, visual computing, 3D scene understanding, point cloud processing, generative AI, vision-language models for sustainable built environments, and parametric modelling plus computational design.

The successful candidate will work on DFG- and industry-funded projects and contribute to research, prototype development, literature review, publication, and presentation of scientific results. The role is embedded in an internationally active, interdisciplinary research group with strong industry and academic network ties, and access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure, including collaboration opportunities within the TUM Georg Nemetschek Institute.

Eligibility highlights: an above-average Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science, Geomatics, or a closely related field; strong analytical skills; proficiency in English; solid background in machine learning and artificial intelligence; strong Python programming skills; and good knowledge of AI frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow. German is not required, but it is an asset. Helpful extras include publications, familiarity with transformers/diffusion models/LLMs/VLMs, and experience with C++, BIM tools, or parametric/computational design tools.

Funding: the position is funded and remunerated according to E13 (TV-L), with support for conference and workshop participation. This is a doctoral researcher opening leading to a Dr.-Ing. / Ph.D. at one of Europe’s leading technical universities.

Application window: applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled, with a stated deadline of 2026-05-25.

How to apply: prepare the requested documents (motivation letter, CV, degree certificates with grades, thesis draft if available, referee contacts, and publications/output list if applicable). Submit the complete application by email to [email protected] and follow the official TUM posting for instructions.
