About this position

A four-year PhD position is available at the Department of Automation and Process Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, in Tromsø. The research focuses on measurement science and mathematical modelling within the seafood industry, particularly addressing industrial processes in the marine environment and the welfare of fish and other marine species during slaughter. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing and future projects by performing measurements, analyses, and mathematical modelling of both existing and new data, with the overarching goal of developing models that streamline the development and verification of industrial equipment for fisheries and aquaculture.

Key research tasks include modelling and analyzing cold shock, electrical field voltages, frequency spectra, and bioimpedance over the fish's brain or ganglion; providing clearer definitions of satisfactory stunning in euthanasia; developing models based on research data; improving analysis methods for EEG/EKG and alternative measurements to reduce reliance on behavioral indicators of consciousness; and developing measurement methods to evaluate stressors and environmental parameters relevant to marine species. The position is structured as a four-year contract, with the fourth year dedicated to teaching and other duties. Applicants must have a master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as bioimpedance, electricity, nerve physiology, signal processing, physics, or mathematics.

Experience with bioimpedance, multi-physics simulations, neurophysiology, EEG/EKG, and offshore or maritime technology is advantageous. Authorship in peer-reviewed publications is valued. Applicants must demonstrate fluency in English, and fluency in Norwegian, Sami, another Scandinavian, or Dutch language is advantageous. Admission to the PhD programme requires a bachelor’s degree of 180 ECTS and a master’s degree of 120 ECTS (or integrated master’s of 300 ECTS), with a minimum grade of C on the master thesis and a weighted grade average of 3.0 for the last two years.

The position offers a salary of 550,800 NOK/year with a 3% yearly increase, a pension scheme, and health care benefits.
