PhD Fellowship in Applied Information Technology: Emerging AI/XR Technologies as Mediators and Co-creators of Human Experiences Kristiania University of Applied Sciences in Norway

Kristiania University of Applied Sciences invites applications for a fully funded PhD fellowship in Applied Information Technology, focusing on the role of emerging AI and XR (extended reality) technologies as mediators and co-creators of human experiences. The position is based at the School of Arts, Design and Media in Oslo, Norway, and is part of the MishMash Centre for AI and Creativity, a national research centre funded by the Research Council of Norway (2025–2030).

The successful candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment, collaborating with experts from both the School of Arts, Design and Media and the School of Economics, Innovation, and Technology. The PhD project will investigate how artificial intelligence and XR systems can be designed and applied to advance creative solutions for cultural production. Research topics include the mediation of human experience by generative and immersive technologies, the influence of AI on creative agency, and the shaping of cultural memory. Central research questions address how AI and XR can enhance creative collaboration, reinterpret cultural heritage, and promote sustainable, inclusive, and ethically responsible innovation in artistic and institutional contexts.

Potential research activities may involve developing or testing creative AI-based XR prototypes in collaboration with artistic, cultural, or archival institutions, and applying methods from human–computer interaction, computational creativity, or digital curation. The project will emphasize ethical, ecological, and accessibility concerns, ensuring that creative AI and XR systems promote cultural diversity, transparency, and respect for human and artistic integrity.

The PhD candidate will have the opportunity to design and evaluate creative AI-based XR systems, explore generative and immersive technologies for public engagement with cultural heritage, analyze human–AI interaction patterns, and implement ethical, sustainable, and inclusive design approaches. Dissemination of findings through exhibitions, conferences, and publications, as well as collaboration with research and cultural-sector partners, is expected. The candidate will also participate in MishMash Centre activities and collaborate with national and international partners.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (120 ECTS or equivalent) in a relevant subject area with a grade B or better, and a relevant 180 ECTS bachelor’s degree. Required skills include analytical and technical competence in applied information technology, especially human–computer interaction and frontend AI development, as well as experience with programming and digital tools (e.g., Python, Unity, Unreal, TouchDesigner). Demonstrated creative or artistic competence and understanding of user-centred or participatory design methods are essential. Proficiency in English is required. Candidates should be motivated for interdisciplinary research and collaboration across technology, arts, and design.

Funding and Benefits: The fellowship is fully funded, offering a competitive salary (NOK 550,800 per year), NOK 50,000 per year for travel and running costs, free health and travel insurance, pension plan, and equipment. The position is for three years, with the earliest start date on 1 September 2026. The university offers strong labour protections, including paid parental and sick leave, and 25 paid vacation days.
