About this position
Joint PhD Fellowship opportunity funded by the Wits-CNRS PhD Joint programme 2026 at the Global Change Institute, University of the Witwatersrand, in collaboration with CNRS.
The project is titled Drivers of Anthropogenic Dust Emission and Variability and focuses on the emerging role of anthropogenic dust in the southern African climate system. The research will investigate key factors influencing anthropogenic dust (ADUST) emissions, their spatial and temporal variability, and their contribution to regional dust load.
The project uses satellite observations and derived gridded products to: detect and apportion ADUST arising from biomass burning and agriculture across two contrasting study regions; quantify environmental and management drivers and their seasonal controls; and project future changes in ADUST using regional downscalings of CMIP6 models.
Applicants should have an MSc in Climate, Environmental Sciences, Geography or a related field. Strong experience in multi-sensor remote sensing data processing and analysis is required, together with familiarity with the climate system and process-based modelling. Quantitative data analysis and/or modelling skills, including Python, are also required. South African candidates will be given preference.
The position is full-time and based in Johannesburg, South Africa, with travel to France and a two-week stay at CNRS as part of the joint programme. Funding covers fees and includes a small stipend for 3 years (2026-2028).
To apply, send a single PDF with your cover letter, CV, contact details for two referees, and academic transcripts to Dr Yolandi Ernst. Applications are considered immediately and will remain open until the position is filled.
