About this position

Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet) is offering four PhD Fellowship positions in Embodied Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Robotic Systems within the Department of Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical Engineering (MEK) at the Faculty of Technology, Art and Design. These positions are part of the Norwegian Centre for Embodied AI (NCEI), a national research centre funded by the Research Council of Norway, which unites leading robotics and AI research groups from academia, industry, and the public sector.

PhD candidates will engage in cutting-edge research at OsloMet OceanLab, focusing on robotics, control, perception, and intelligent autonomous systems. The research aims to advance the scientific foundations of embodied AI and develop robust autonomous robotic systems capable of reliable operation in complex, dynamic environments. Projects span robotic perception, navigation, manipulation, and multi-robot cooperation across aerial, marine, and heterogeneous platforms. Four distinct research questions are addressed: data-driven underwater manipulation using AI, resilient navigation for autonomous aerial vehicles, perception and situational awareness via multi-modal sensor fusion, and cooperative control of heterogeneous robotic systems.

Applicants must have a master's degree (normally 120 ECTS) in Robotics, Cybernetics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Physics, Control Engineering, or related fields. Minimum grade requirements are: average grade B in master's subjects, grade B on master's thesis, and average grade C in bachelor's subjects. Written and oral proficiency in English is required. Admission to the PhD programme in Engineering Science at OsloMet is mandatory, and applicants with foreign education must provide pre-approval documentation. All master's exams must be completed by 30 June 2026, and official diploma/transcript submitted by 1 October 2026. Strong programming skills, mathematics, estimation, and dynamical systems are advantageous. Personal qualities such as motivation, communication, collaboration, analytical skills, and innovation are valued.

The positions offer a salary of 550,800 NOK per year, with a 2% deduction for pension contributions to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. PhD Fellows may apply for funding for extended research stays abroad. OsloMet provides engaging work assignments, participation in research groups, opportunities for academic development, welfare schemes, sports and cultural offers, and loan and pension arrangements. The university is committed to inclusivity and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates, including those with gaps in employment or education.

Applications must be submitted through OsloMet's electronic recruitment system by the deadline of May 4, 2026. Required documents include an application letter, CV, reference letters, certificates/diplomas, transcripts, and pre-approval for foreign education. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Documents must be in English or a Scandinavian language, with authorized translations if needed. Background checks may be conducted for relevant positions, with employment conditional upon approval.

For further information, contact Head of Research Biplab K Datta ([email protected]) or Professor Vahid Hassani ([email protected]). Administrative inquiries can be directed to [email protected].
