About this position
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites applications for a PhD position in cancer bioinformatics and computational biology, based at the Faculty of Medicine’s Ein Kerem campus. The Caldas Lab, part of the Lautenberg Center for Immunology and Cancer Research, offers a vibrant interdisciplinary environment with advanced infrastructure for cutting-edge biomedical research. The lab’s research focuses on the functional genomics of breast cancer, molecular taxonomy, and the development of novel biomarkers and therapeutics. It has pioneered studies in circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) as a monitoring biomarker and liquid biopsy, and utilizes patient-derived tumor explants as in vivo cancer models.
Building on foundations established at the University of Cambridge, the new Caldas laboratory pursues two integrated research directions: modeling cancer ecosystems in space and time using patient-derived tumor xenografts (PDTXs) and immune cells, and developing novel cancer biomarkers and therapeutics through multi-omics, dynamic disease monitoring, and data integration using machine learning and artificial intelligence. The PhD project will involve analysis of single cell and spatial profiling data, deploying machine learning and deep learning approaches to unravel the complexity of malignant tumors and their microenvironments.
Professor Carlos Caldas, a highly cited researcher and award-winning scientist, leads the lab. He brings extensive experience from the University of Cambridge and is recognized for his contributions to cancer medicine and genomics. The Hebrew University is a global top 100 institution, renowned for its research excellence and diverse academic community. The campus is located in Jerusalem, a city rich in history and culture, offering students a unique blend of academic and social opportunities.
Funding is available, with a monthly stipend of 2200-2600 USD. Applicants must hold an MSc in computer science, computational biology, or bioinformatics, with a strong academic record (BSc GPA 3.5+ and MSc with merit). Candidates should be motivated, collaborative, and possess excellent English skills. The university values diversity and inclusion, welcoming students from all backgrounds.
To apply, submit three separate PDFs: a letter of motivation, CV (including publications), copies of academic degrees and transcripts, and names and contacts of at least two references. The application deadline is March 1st, 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the provided application link.
