About this position

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites applications for a PhD position in Cancer Spatial Biology, based at the Faculty of Medicine’s Ein Kerem campus in Jerusalem. This internationally acclaimed research institution is renowned for its pioneering biomedical research and progressive health care, fostering an interdisciplinary environment that brings together researchers from across the globe.

The successful candidate will join the Caldas Lab, part of the Lautenberg Center for Immunology and Cancer Research. The Center is dedicated to advancing basic immunology and cancer research, providing state-of-the-art infrastructure and a stimulating environment for scientists and students. The Caldas Lab has a distinguished history in functional genomics of breast cancer, having played a central role in redefining molecular taxonomy, establishing ctDNA as a biomarker, and pioneering patient-derived tumor explants as in vivo models. Recent work integrates multi-omics approaches with machine learning to predict therapy response, and the new lab at Hebrew University builds on foundations established at the University of Cambridge.

Research directions include modeling cancer ecosystems in space and time using patient-derived tumor xenografts and immune cells, and developing novel cancer biomarkers and therapeutics through multi-omics, dynamic disease monitoring, and advanced data integration using machine learning and artificial intelligence. The PhD project focuses on developing advanced spatial biology methods, such as spatial transcriptomics and spatial proteomics, with particular emphasis on tracking clones in situ.

Supervision will be provided by Professor Carlos Caldas, a highly cited researcher and award-winning leader in cancer medicine, recently appointed as Full Professor at Hebrew University. Professor Caldas brings extensive experience from the University of Cambridge and has received numerous international honors for his contributions to cancer research.

Funding is available, with a monthly stipend ranging from 2200 to 2600 USD. Applicants must hold an MSc in cancer biology, with expertise in spatial biology considered an advantage. A strong academic record is required (BSc GPA 3.5+ and MSc with merit), along with scientific curiosity, motivation for collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and excellent English proficiency. Hebrew University is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, welcoming students from all backgrounds.

To apply, submit three separate PDFs: a letter of motivation, CV (including publications), copies of academic degrees and transcripts, and names and contacts of at least two references. Applications should be submitted via the provided link by March 1st, 2026.

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is a global top 100 university, with a vibrant academic community and a rich cultural environment in the heart of Jerusalem. Students enjoy access to world-class research facilities, diverse cultural experiences, and a supportive, inclusive campus atmosphere.
