About this position
This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on advancing humanoid robot design, specifically exploring how actuator design and topology influence robot performance. The project aims to develop novel compliant and muscle-inspired actuation concepts, enabling robots to move, manipulate, and interact with their environment in a more human-like manner. Embedded within the Robotics section of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the research will bridge the gap between actuator architecture and whole-body robot performance through advanced simulation frameworks.
Key research topics include compliant actuator design and analysis, kinematic and dynamic modeling of humanoid robots, biomimetic and bio-inspired robot design, co-simulation of mechanics, actuation, sensing, and control, as well as performance evaluation and optimization of complex robotic systems. The position offers a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, with opportunities to work alongside experts in mechanical engineering, control, and artificial intelligence, and to contribute to cutting-edge humanoid robotic platforms.
The PhD is part of the Beethoven program, which aims to educate top talent and strengthen research across STEM fields. Supervision is provided by Dr. ir. Frederik Ostyn and Prof.dr.ir. René van de Molengraft. Applicants should have a master’s degree in robotics, mechatronics, or (electro)mechanical engineering, a strong background in mechanical design and modeling, and proficiency in CAD software and programming languages. Experience with robot modeling and simulation tools, real-time software deployment, and prototyping is highly valued. Fluency in English and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required.
Employment is full-time for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The position includes teaching responsibilities (10–15% of employment), a competitive salary (€3,059–€3,881/month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, paid parental leave, and allowances for commuting and home working. International candidates benefit from a tax compensation scheme and support from the Staff Immigration Team. The university offers excellent technical infrastructure, sports facilities, and on-campus childcare.
Eindhoven University of Technology is a leading international institution located in Brainport Eindhoven, a world-leading tech region. The Department of Mechanical Engineering conducts research aligned with high-tech industry interests, aiming to produce scientifically educated and application-driven engineers. The academic community is diverse and vibrant, with over 13,000 students and 7,000 staff.
To apply, submit a complete application online, including your CV, publication list, references, research interest statement, diplomas, transcripts, and a brief description of your MSc thesis or relevant projects. Only complete applications will be considered. The vacancy remains open until filled, with a deadline of July 11, 2026. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed. A pre-employment screening may be part of the selection procedure.
