About this position
This PhD project, based in the School of Mathematical Sciences at Queen Mary University of London, focuses on the algebra and geometry of Landau-Ginzburg models. Landau-Ginzburg models are defined as regular maps from a variety to the affine line and serve as powerful tools in algebraic geometry. They are instrumental in encoding the geometry of algebraic varieties into the language of commutative algebra, homological algebra, and singularity theory. In recent years, these models have gained prominence in derived categories and enumerative geometry, drawing inspiration from the field of mirror symmetry.
The aim of this project is to develop new ideas or applications for Landau-Ginzburg models, potentially advancing both theoretical understanding and practical applications in pure mathematics. The project is supervised by Professor Tyler Kelly, an expert in the field. The position is fully funded for three years for students with Home fee status through the New Talent Research Enabling Scheme, which covers a stipend at the QMUL rate and Home tuition fees. International students are welcome to apply but must cover the difference between Overseas and Home fees.
The School of Mathematical Sciences is committed to equality of opportunity and supports part-time study and family-friendly benefits. Applicants should have a strong background in pure mathematics, particularly in algebraic geometry or related areas.
The expected start date is 21 September 2026, and the application deadline is 28 January 2026, with further applications accepted until the position is filled. For more information, applicants are encouraged to visit the project and application process pages or contact Professor Kelly directly.
