About this position
Université Laval is offering a funded PhD opportunity in anthropology, focusing on the experiences of deaf people who use cochlear implants. The position is part of the multi-year CIHR-funded project "deafnesses," led by Professor Stephanie Lloyd. The research will document experiences with cochlear implants, identify gaps in clinical and research measurement, catalogue what users want to be known about their experiences, and mobilize interdisciplinary expertise to analyze diverse data sets. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team, including international partners from Australia and the United States, and will be trained in project management, methods, analysis, and knowledge mobilization.
The PhD student will receive $24,000 CAD per year for four years, plus research expenses, and may access up to $16,000 CAD in merit-based funding. Additional scholarships and funding opportunities are available at Université Laval. The research will form the basis of the student's dissertation, and the student will have opportunities to collaborate, present, and publish with the team.
Applicants should have a background in anthropology, with preference for those experienced in science and technology studies and critical disability studies. Both English and French are important for the position. Application materials include a CV, a brief letter of interest, a 1-page summary of current/past interests, a 1-page sketch of research direction, and two academic references. The deadline for applications is 15 February 2026, with the start of studies in autumn 2026. Late applications may be considered if the position remains unfilled.
